George C. McGough Nature Park is a great place to spend an afternoon with the family. It has plenty of activities for people of all ages. This park has a lot to do, including:
Kayaking
This is the main attraction at the park. The kayaks are available for rent, and paddling around Rainbow River can be very relaxing. Also, the water in Rainbow River is about 72 degrees year-round, so it is very comfortable.
Swimming
Many people like to go swimming at George C. McGough Nature Park because of how warm and clean the water is. The sand on the bottom also makes for a soft landing when coming out of the water after you decide you’ve had enough sun or want to cool off in some really cold (in temperature) spring-fed river water!
Hiking
The trails throughout the nature park provide many different opportunities to explore Florida’s landscape. There is a boardwalk that allows visitors an opportunity to view pristine wetlands up close, while also providing amazing views of the river from above. During your hike, you might see some fauna such as turtles or alligators soaking in the sun on a fallen tree trunk beside the trail! These animals come out during the basking season (April-July).
Campfire Circle/Rock Climbing Wall
There is nothing quite like roasting marshmallows over an open fire with family under stars twinkling brightly against darkening skies. At the campfire circle, visitors can have a bonfire and enjoy this great American tradition. The park also has one of Central Florida’s only rock climbing walls!
Bicycling & Jogging
The park is open from sunrise to sunset, so there are plenty of hours in which to get some exercise on the trails or even throughout the nature center grounds with your bicycle if you choose! There are water fountains at various locations throughout the property where runners and bicyclists may fill up their bottles. This ensures they will stay hydrated while enjoying themselves outdoors during sunny days in Largo area.
Plenty for Kids Too!
At the George C. McGough Nature Park for kids area, children can learn about nature in a fun way. There are many different activities for children to enjoy, including:
- Climbing wall
- Swing set area with two regular swings and one baby swing set up
- Petting zoo (seasonal)
- Picnic pavilion/covered seating areas located throughout the park where families can relax or eat their packed lunches together while enjoying time outside!
Nature Center & Gift Shop -Stroll through the Nature center to learn about Florida’s ecosystems, flora, fauna, environmental issues affecting our planet today, and much more by viewing interactive displays! For gift ideas, there is also a small gift shop onsite at George C. McGough Nature Park selling items such as water bottles, t-shirts, bug boxes, and more!
