Florida Botanical Gardens is a beautiful botanical garden in Largo, Florida. The gardens were founded in 1968 and now cover more than 130 acres of land. There are many different types of plants to see from around the world as well as an array of animals including flamingos, cockatoos, and various reptiles. In addition to the main attraction at Florida Botanical Gardens-the plant life-there are also several other attractions that make this place worth visiting!
History
This botanical garden has a great history that makes for an interesting visit. The land Florida Botanical Gardens is located on was once owned by Henry B. Plant, who made his fortune in the railroad industry and built the Tampa Bay Hotel (which still stands today). He would also go on to build one of his trademark hotels, named after himself-The Henry B. Plant Museum which you can visit too!
The land in which this garden sits was originally used as a cattle ranch. In the 1930s, it became the home to several wealthy families who raised quality beef for sale in local markets. After World War II ended, there was an increased interest in Florida real estate and some of these homeowners began subdividing their land into smaller parcels for sale.
Today
Today visitors can enjoy many activities at this botanical garden including hiking trails, biking paths, fishing ponds with pedal boats available to rent by the hour or half-day (perfect for family outings), birdwatching walks led by trained naturalists that are open to all ages! Kids will love seeing rare birds like Scarlet Macaws up close along with other native species on exhibit-and learning about them too! There is also a gift shop and a cafe on the premises so you can purchase souvenirs to take home with you.
Flora
Florida Botanical Gardens have over 50 acres dedicated to landscaping alone with more than 20 different gardens from around the world including Asia, Australia, Europe, and South America as well as many others! There are multiple themed trails throughout this park, and if you don’t see what you’re looking for there’s no need to fear because the garden is always adding new plants to its collection.
Fauna
There are dozens of different types of animals living in this botanical garden including flamingos, cockatoos, parrots, and many reptiles like lizards! also visit the garden from November through April to see a variety of colorful butterflies. You can also stop by at night for a special presentation about different types of nocturnal animals and plants that you don’t want to miss!
